You've seen her in here, oh, I don't know, maybe a dozen times now. We just absolutely love what she does, and I know you do too. So we've got Kylie Melvin from the Primitive Prairie. How are we doing today?
SPEAKER_00Good. How are you doing?
SPEAKER_01Fantastic. Before we get into our topic, remind everybody what you do.
SPEAKER_00I'm a holistic wellness practitioner and an herbalist with the Primitive Prairie.
SPEAKER_01There we go. And when you say herbalist, what all does that entail?
SPEAKER_00Well, that entails basically taking your entire body back to the basics, making sure you're hitting the foundations of health first and foremost in your daily life, and then supplementing with herbs when you have some minor symptoms and trying to live more holistically minded.
SPEAKER_01There you go. And before we get into the topic of the day, remind everybody your foundations of health.
SPEAKER_00All right. So everybody's got different ones, but mine are sleep, because sleep is has everything to do with how your body functions, eating real food, drinking enough water, and also making sure you're mentally well, whether that's socializing, going to church, yoga, but making sure you're mentally sound. And those are probably my top ones.
SPEAKER_01Well, today we're going to talk about a subject that's been getting more attention lately, right? So ultra-processed food. First off, let's what is an ultra-processed food?
SPEAKER_00So there's a lot of different scales out there. So you have unprocessed, that's going to be something straight from the source. You can identify it. Your ancestors 500 years ago could identify it. That's going to be your meat as is, your plants as is. And then you have things minimally processed, which you can still identify as the food source. So this would be like I looked at some in my cabinet today to have examples that people could easily recognize. So I have dehydrated strawberries that those still look like strawberries. Have they been changed? Yes. So then you could say they've been processed. Um, they've been dehydrated. They're still good for your children. Um so those are okay to have. And then some people add in some other different levels, but I'm going to go straight to the next one where it's it's changed. You've you've changed how you can recognize it. It's been refined, it's been modified, uh, enzymes have been added, but it's basically they go through and kind of like deep clean and sanitize it and then they're dehydrated. And those are ultra-processed foods. So uh I wanted to concentrate on those because a lot of people don't know most of their diet is made up of ultra-processed food. And I want people to maybe be able to look past the marketing. That's a big thing I'm passionate about. The way foods are marketed to you. These manufacturers are not stupid about how they market things to you. And they're, I brought in some examples today, but they're really good at they're really good at making you think, well, this is a good option for my family. And I can't fault anybody for seeing some of these products and thinking, oh, good, this says that's high in and protein and heart healthy. But I want you to turn it around. I don't want you just to Google these weird ingredients. I want you to put it in and then say, How is this made? And that's where the eye-opening part starts. It's where you start recognizing, like, I don't want that. And how does my body digest that?
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00So I'm gonna concentrate on kind of one more than others today because there's just too many, but it's a good starting point because it's in almost everything. So okay.
SPEAKER_01Well, let's get right into that. What's that one?
SPEAKER_00It is multodextrin. Okay, it is one of the worst things and it is in everything. It's a $2.62 billion a year industry for these major food corporations. It is a big deal. Um, and the reason it's a big deal is let's think, think of an example that has maltodextrin, but mayonnaise, mayonnaise is not many ingredients if you made it from scratch. But years ago, they're like, we need to, we, I mean, it's expensive to make mayonnaise. You need eggs. So the so they decided there's a way we can maybe make this texture still smooth by using cheaper ingredients. We'll have bigger profitability. Not only that, but maltodextrin uh doesn't make you feel full. So you actually will eat ingest more calories. It's one of those things where it's also a preservative, it's also a thickening agent. It's it's one of those things that does so much for the corporations that they're like, let's throw this in everything. Right. Uh maltodextrin is a refined starch and it is a fast-acting carbohydrate. So what they do, and this is the part where people really need to look at ingredients, but in the United States, corn is usually used to make this refined starch. Um, and what they'll do is they will use bare, like bottom-of-the-barrel corn. This is not some like nice Chatham sweet corn festival corn. This is this is like the dog food corn. Um, they have tested maltodextrin. It is heavily sprayed with glyphosate. It is GMO corn. I do think in some of the European countries they'll use potatoes, like bottom of the barrel potatoes. You can also use rice for maltodextrin. Um, but they will refine that. And this is the part most people don't know. And this is, I'm actually gonna grab this now and I'm gonna try to hide who it is. But I went on a journey and I found a raisin bran with granola. So it sounds sounds healthy.
SPEAKER_01Sounds healthy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And it says it is heart healthy, right? On the front, it's got like a huge heart and it says it's heart healthy. And it says see side panel for saturated fats and cholesterol fats. So it's or cholesterol facts, so it's saying and how it's related to heart disease. So it's saying, like, look, we have all these things that are great for your heart. Right. So I looked at the ingredients, and I do want to say at the bottom it says vitamins and minerals and has a huge list, which some people see that and they're like, oh, good. There's but it's like these are added synthetic vitamins and minerals. So I do need to preface with that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, just sprayed on there essentially.
SPEAKER_00Everything actually looks good. And this, I did get this from a company that I do trust more than others. So this does not even look bad as some of the raisin brands I've encountered in my life. But right there is maltodextrin. So while the cholesterol is zero, total fat is 2%. I do want to say it's interesting that this says it's heart healthy and then has maltodextrin because this is this is a shocking part I said I was gonna mention. So on the glycemic index, sugar is in the 70 range. Maltodextrin is actually one of the highest things I could find. I was Googling different things that cause a blood sugar spike, a huge spike in glucose levels. Maltodextrin is about 135 to 140. Woof. So you're saying this is heart healthy, and this is what's going to keep a kid eating bowl after bowl, or and that is shooting up your blood sugar. If you were diabetic, I would just be steering clear of anything with maltodextrin, but it is in everything. Uh, and it's you'll see different things. You'll be you'll see soluble corn fiber. That is actually a type of maltodextrin. It's a little better, it doesn't cause as bad of a spike, but you will see if you see something like cornstarch, any of these refined starches, I would steer clear of those. Uh, but the thing with maltodextrin is the things you find it the most in are puddings, anything that needs a thickening agent, anything that needs a preservative, you'll see it in granolas a lot. And and the thing is, is it doesn't add a sugar taste to your food, but it acts worse than sugar in your body. Right. And so here is one where people don't like to hear this, but take a look at any of your protein shakes or your pre-workout shakes. That's where you'll see it. You will see some people boast they are non-GMO. Some have started trying to use, I guess, less sprayed maltodextrin, does not change the effects of the maltodextrin. And here's what's really crazy about it. So in the UK, I don't know if it's all of Europe or just the UK, they actually will not let you market an item at children if it has a certain level of these ultra-processed ingredients. And you're not allowed to put like a monkey, you know, swinging through trees on a cereal box if it has that. We don't do that here. And so there one of the most recent studies was that 67% of a child's diet is ultra-processed food.
SPEAKER_0167%.
SPEAKER_0067%. So it's one of those things. Like I know before I've said things, you know, 80-20, there is a difference, though that shouldn't be one meal of your day. It's a difference between every few days having something with a little process and having your body run off that.
SPEAKER_01Because yeah, 67%.
SPEAKER_00I mean, if you're if you're a if you're yeah, if you're a three meal a day person, yeah, you know, in your two out of your yeah, two out of your three meals are in your chips and your puddings and your kind bars are awful. Kind bars, I would like people because you're gonna see amaranth, which is a an ancient grain, you're gonna see all these ancient grains in it, and they boast how good it is for you.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00And then I want you to look at everything else in it the binding agents, the emulsifiers, go look up and then look up how they're made and how they interact with your body. Um, and then I also brought in ranch dressing today, and I don't even know if I could read that whole label. So but it's it's a lot of seed oils. So if you are somebody, we talked about allergies before, if you're somebody trying to lower the inflammation in your body, I would be avoiding that. And one of the things is people don't realize these are all items that you could make. And I know that sounds some people are probably rolling their eyes, like, when would I have time? But it's actually really easy if you get the base ingredients. You I can make like most of our pantry staples from ranch dressing to sour cream to mayonnaise with the same base ingredients in no time flat. And there's no reason your ranch dressing should have like 30 ingredients and preservatives. It should be milk mayonnaise. I obviously just mentioned you shouldn't buy store-bought mayonnaise, but uh some companies have tried to make simpler ingredient mayonnaise too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, some of the companies have started too.
SPEAKER_00And then just some herbs and make it how you like it, add some dill in. Another weird one for me is taco seasoning. A lot of those have some form of maltodextrin or something similar. Taco seasoning is cumin, chili powder, paprika sometimes, garlic powder and salt and pepper, and maybe some oregano if you feel like it. And why do you need to buy that with something that's gonna spike your blood sugar? Your tacos shouldn't be spiking your blood sugar.
SPEAKER_01No, no, we we've made our own taco seasoning for a long time. And like you said, it's super easy.
SPEAKER_00I don't even measure it. I'm just making tacos and sprinkling things in until it smells kind of like a should. And I'm like, that's absolutely so it's one of those things that I get torn because I hear a lot of people say, and I believe this, eat something that's been alive. A lot of people say, eat something that's been living, whether it's a plant, a mushroom, an animal. But as you can see, corporations have learned how to make a profit. You look up Maltodextrin, it came from a plant, but then it's been refined and ultra-processed. And so what you need to do is I I know this has become more common to hear is people saying, Would your great great great grandparent recognize this as food? Right. So when you're looking at some of these, look at are the ingredients making this byproduct, are they all recognizable foods? It's no, you're gonna start seeing really weird additives, a weird refining process. And so that's kind of why I chose multixtrin because you can Google that one and you can see, oh, it came from corn. Like if you were in a hurry in the store, you're gonna see it's a corn-derived refined starch, is how they worded it. And then they'll also list it as like a carbohydrate. And you're like, oh, that's like a mac macronutrient. Macronutrient, right? Okay, like I'm good. No. So you need to look up what does this do? To know it's almost twice as high as sugar on the glycemic index, that's insane. It's in everything. You're not thinking you're giving your kid a blood sugar spike when you're giving them granola this morning. Or so it's one of those things where I feel like as a nation, if you're aware of this and you become more aware and back away, these corporations are gonna lose that leverage. And you need to realize that most things are owned by these big corporations and they know what they're doing. Uh, what was when Poppy Soda just got bought out by Pepsi a few months ago? Okay. And you think, like at first, you think, oh, this little tiny business made these healthier soda alternatives. And then next thing you know, it's yeah, somebody else bought it out and they know what they're doing. They know how to make a profit.
SPEAKER_01And they know how to make things ultra palatable too. Yeah. When they when they are ultra processing, they're making it ultra palatable to where it all is. That's the thing with maltodex. You want more and you want more.
SPEAKER_00That's the thing with maltodextrin. It was supposed to change the texture and the way um it even like broke down in your mouth to make you be like, this was easy and enjoyable to eat. This wasn't like a crunchy carrot. This was nice to eat. And then it leaves you wanting more because it it doesn't make you full. You're actually not getting nutrients, but you are getting calories. You're getting no nutrients from it. And I always feel like you should get most of your nutrients from food. I'm not, I'm not even a huge fan of supplements, which can be for another, I'm not unless you're like deficit. I always think food has evolved to have multiple nutrients to help your body digest it. Like an orange is more than vitamin C. Um, and it has other vitamins and minerals to help your body take that in. And so to know your food is so void of anything good for your body, it's the bare basis of having your body function what like a well-oiled machine. Um, I know my husband was making fun of me because he's like a he's a car guy, you know. And I told him one day, I said, it's weird for me because we get a manual with our cars and it tells you what kind of gas to use, and it tells you to get the oil change every so many miles, and it tells you when to do a transmission flood flush. And I said, But you have different people. You have the people that do the oil change and that's it, but they won't change the brakes till the rotors are grinding. They're like, oh boy, what's that noise? Right. And then you have the people that don't even get the oil change, and you have the we have thousands and thousands of years of evidence of the bare minimum our body needs to function optimally. This isn't new, this isn't a car that's only been around for 20 years. This is Hippocrates studied this in ancient times. We know this is what our body needs, yet we ignore it. And it's like somebody not taking care of their car. Right. No, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Um, but he's like, wow, yeah, that's true. I'm like, yeah, there's just different people, but this is this is not only, it's not that it's just lacking, giving you nutrients. It's not that it's void of nutrients, it's actually wreaking havoc on all of your body systems. One of the times we talked about cortisol levels, and I talked about keeping your blood sugar down, and that is spiking it. You think you're having a granola bar and you're spiking your blood sugar. So it's it's one of those be actually mindful of what those ingredients you can't pronounce are. And even if it says cornstarch or modified corn fiber, or what are some of the other modified food starch. Yeah, modified food starch is another one on there. Fun ways where they're just like, oh, food's in there and it's just been modified a little. It's it's just a starch. It's just a no, no, no. I want you to look up that process and see what that means for your body.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, because, and especially with our kids today, the whole I ate like that as a kid and I'm fine. Are we fine? We're a very sick nation. Right. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, are we fine?
SPEAKER_00Are we fine? I think we are fine.
SPEAKER_01And the other side of that too is was that food really the same?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's a few. It's gotten worse over the years. Um, one thing I I have done is I've started studying. This is I'm like, if you pulled my IP address, because I started also looking up and almost acting like I'm interested in knowing what they are doing in the food manufacturing industry. And you would be shocked to see some of the things they're trying to come up with to make ice cream never melt again. That's that's one of them. They want to make ice cream shelf stable.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Do you know what kind of processing? It's not going to get better. It has progressively gotten worse since the 90s, since the 80s. I think one of the studies was comparing, I think in 19, one of the studies I pulled it said, and and this was on something crazy, like 10 million kids. Like I said, in 1999, it was 60% of their diet was ultra-processed food. Now it's 67 because there's even more of it in their food. And it'll just go up another 7 or 8% in the next 15 years. Or so it's going to keep evolving. It's going to get worse unless we start paying attention and stop buying those foods.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. All these different, like they say, Franken foods now. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's scary what they're coming up with. Just keep your diet colorful. I don't even shop those inside aisles. I I don't even look at them. It grosses me. Right. Sounds like that's a good idea. No, that's the that's the way it is.
SPEAKER_01And I had a I don't think we've ever talked about this. I've had a little inside look at that industry. In my younger days, I worked for two different, very large food manufacturers. One of them created a ton of multidextra. And I was part of the bigger.
SPEAKER_00Oh, no, no wonder you're like, I know about multixtra.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. No, that was from 18 to 24-ish.
SPEAKER_00So you know Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I look back at it and I'm thinking the exact same thing as what you're talking about. One of the products that they were creating at the time was a resistant starch that passed through your body. Your body didn't digest it at all. And I'm thinking to myself, it's like, well, that can't be good if you're just putting something in there and it's just where what do we do?
SPEAKER_00What do you do? I feel that way about everything. Anything you put in your body, it's like, where is it going and what is it doing? It's not everything, everything people put or inject or do. It's going somewhere. I don't know what people think is happening. I'm like, where do you think it's going? It's moving through your systems, it's going, it's going through different barriers when it can. It's it's more than what it looks like.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, and I I watched all the different processes that all those things go to from, like you say, you start with junk corn and end with all these different corn.
SPEAKER_00It is. And then the seed oils is a whole nother thing, but knowing the process those are made, it's scary. It's it's scary. Uh olive oil is one of those things you can look at and say it's more closely, maybe relate. It's like pressed olives. Maybe you can see that and be like, okay, that's not as far removed as some of the others. But really look at the process they're made. That's where it all is. How was it made? I wish how it's made the TV show would do a segment. I'd love to watch it. Okay.
SPEAKER_01No, and a couple of them that you brought up, I think people really need to watch. The granola and granola bars sound healthy to most people, most people, but most of them are pretty junk as well. You made them at home.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I make energy balls for my kids all the time for picnics. Those should not be many ingredients, but they need to be able to ship these. And even your even your ice cream now. I know I I joked about them trying to make this shelf stable ice cream, but it has to go on semis. It's got a lot of gums that are bad, a lot of binding agents to try to keep it, you know, as as cold as possible and in a frozen state, in a solid state, I guess I should say, for as long as possible. It's they have to make a profit. They have to keep the cost down for you to buy it, and they have room for a profit. And sadly, you can avoid that by just eating real food and use honey instead of sugar. Does sugar look like sugar cane? I mean, Harvest Market just had a bunch of sugar cane. I'm like, this does not, I told my kids, I'm like, this doesn't look like sugar, it doesn't. So that's something that's been heavily refined. But honey, honey has not. Honey looks a lot like its source. So that's what I always tell people. Does it look like the source it came from? And the more it does, the better it is.
SPEAKER_01So like you said, there's a difference between you brought up the vitamin C example with an orange. Yeah. It's much different to get the vitamin C from an actual orange than it is to get it from sprayed on a raisin brand or something.
SPEAKER_00And like I said, it's if you're deficit, go get a really good supplement and speak with. But it's like for daily use, really try to uh try to get all of those vitamins from your diet. And I do know there's some, like I think 50% of people are magnesium deficit deficit. Well, that that's one of those things I think with our current food uh diets in America, I think that's one of the things people struggle to get in their diet. And that's why we're so deficit. So I know a lot of people are on magnesium supplements and things, but it's it's just be mindful of trying to eat the real food straight from the source. You are helping all your body systems, you're helping your sleeping pattern. It's much bigger than that, but definitely with the kids. Like I said, America does not have any restrictions on marketing. But those those corporations know what they do. They hire the best of the best. And you all are smarter than that. We can do better. But they know exactly what they're. It's interesting seeing them boast what they boast on the front of it and turning that over and being like, this is contradicting. Right.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think was it a documentary I was watching, or it might have been us talking. I don't know. But the there was a transition at one point where all the folks that were doing all the the cigarette companies and the tobacco companies that owned all that ended up buying these food companies to where and they use some of the same marketing techniques and basically it's Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00And a lot of those additives are known carcinogens, and they will actually tell you they're pretty much as bad as cigarettes. But I hope people will be mindful because we are in the beginning. I'm the people all saying I'm still here, I'm fine. We really are not. Right.
SPEAKER_01We're not. Right.
SPEAKER_00Fine. So hopefully people will be mindful and do better for their kids because at some point we have to turn the tide for the next generations to do better. I would love to see everybody go back to the basics 100%.
SPEAKER_01Completely agree. And even if you wholeheartedly believe you're fine, how much better could you be if you made these changes?
SPEAKER_00Good point. So and feel better and have a better mood. And yeah, that's true. It's all related.
SPEAKER_01And if you're out there getting those protein shakes, we touched on it a minute ago. I would say probably 95% of pre-made protein shakes are absolute trash. So be careful with those, even though you think you're trying to be healthy and get all your protein in.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Take a look at those. Those are mostly girls.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. No, it's hard to tell because a lot of times, you know, a lot of your listeners are wellness minded and they love their protein. And so it's hard to tell some because I know they're trying to do better for their body, but it's like just you can still find some that are better options. I'm not saying you can't have anything added to anything ever. Just look at the best option, try to do better. Like I just said, the soluble corn fiber, it at least doesn't act as bad as multodextrin. Right. It's still a refined, processed ingredient.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00It's still a bad sign, but it's better. So look up your ingredients, try to stick to the basics, and you'll do good.
SPEAKER_01Completely agree. Well, if somebody wants to just have a discussion with you about this and go down the road a little bit more with you, where do they go?
