SPEAKER_00

Really great. Thanks for having me.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. You brought another doctor with you, Dr. Daryl Allen from your practice, right? Daryl, welcome.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you for coming down.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's great to be here.

SPEAKER_01

Looking forward to getting your input on all this stuff too. Dr. Sammy always spits some fire with us on the wellness upgrade. So we're looking forward to hearing what you have to say too. Before we do the today's topic, let's remind everybody about your practice and what you guys do.

SPEAKER_02

Go ahead, Daryl. I'm Dr. Daryl Allen, and I have just recently moved my office of 22 years down to uh Wagner Chiropractic. And uh it's uh just a family atmosphere, getting the whole family adjusted from the little ones up to older generations and and clearing up all the problems that they've gathered over the years.

SPEAKER_01

And Dr. Sammy, I'm sure everybody remembers you, but remind them again.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, Dr. Sammy Wagner, located at 7012 Kingsmill Court in the Piper Glenn Plaza. Um we've been there almost nine years now, and then we're really excited to have Daryl with us now.

SPEAKER_01

Awesome. Well, today's topic, Cairo myths, chiropractic myths. So we've got eight of them we're gonna go over today. Hopefully dispel some of those things that people think about chiropractic that are absolutely incorrect. So how about we start with once you start? This is one I've heard many times myself. Once once you start, you can never stop. Is it truth or myth?

SPEAKER_02

Well, it's it's like anything. I tell people all the time, it's what you want out of it. Yeah, you can come in a couple times and feel better, but how much have we really fixed? And it's the same if you start a diet or go to the gym once and or you eat one salad, where are you gonna be at? It's what you want out of it, is is the biggest thing. Uh so many people come in, uh, we get them started on a program, we get them fixed back up, they they're doing better, and then we maintain it there for all those hurdles that they come across down the road. Um, and so it's just cleaning things up uh down the road.

SPEAKER_01

And it's probably changes through time, right? You may you might start with yeah, it's a little more of an intensive program that they're on, and then maybe it goes down a little bit. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_00

And we kind of talk about that at the first visit with everyone too. What's right for one person isn't gonna be right for everybody. So, for example, pediatric adjusting, they haven't been through the normal wear and tear that a standard adult has gone through. And so a kiddo might not need several visits over several months, over several years. You know, we have some patients who come in once a week. We have some patients who come in every couple of months. So you're gonna know how you feel and function best. And so it doesn't necessarily mean that if you come one time, you have to continue coming forever. But most of the time when you feel better and you function better, you wanna keep doing what you're doing.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. Yeah, no doubt about it. I love the analogy with the working out and everything. You can start eating better, but if you only do it a few times, it's not gonna really do much good for you long term. Yeah, one salad a week isn't gonna cut it. Right. Exactly. Well, number two, chiropractors only treat low back pain. Truth or myth.

SPEAKER_00

Myth. We hear that a lot where people don't think they need to see a chiropractor because their back isn't hurting. And although that is something that we treat often, low back pain, neck pain, headaches, there's a lot of other ailments that we can also treat, carpal tunnel, any type of tendonitis, just when your ankles feel restricted or your wrists feel restricted, anything that is a joint we can work on. Um, we do a lot of different things with muscles too. So just because it's not in your low back, it doesn't mean that you don't need to see someone.

SPEAKER_02

Absolutely. Well, and so many things are connected too. You know, if the low back is off, that differs uh in the way your knees are gonna function and or your digestion or goes right down the chain. Yeah, exactly. That's something that so many people don't even think about is the nerves that come out of your low back, not only do they cause pain, but they also go to to the gut and change how that functions. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And that's what I love about the holistic model and the chiropractic model is it's it's not just that one little thing. Everything's connected. You really have to take care of all of it.

SPEAKER_02

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_01

So next thing I've heard a lot of times, even when I was a kid, it seemed like I heard this a lot, right? So adjustments are dangerous. You know, you'd hear, oh, so somebody's cracking your neck. That's dangerous, right? So truth or myth.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we're we're gonna go myth on this one. Yeah, you know, it's it's one of those things. I've gotten my son adjusted since the day he was born, and uh, I adjusted all my family members and my grandmother who who lived to almost a hundred. And I like those guys. I like them a lot.

SPEAKER_00

So if it's dangerous, you're not gonna do it to the person you love the most.

SPEAKER_02

Uh and and then we get each other adjusted all the time too. So I I've never been worried when she's gotten me adjusted ever.

SPEAKER_00

So I do think the problem is, is there are some people doing things maybe for social media where it's not necessarily something that we learned in school, but it's become maybe trendy. And so I think finding the right chiropractor that you trust that maybe isn't an aggressive style of adjuster, there's a lot of different techniques. There's a very gentle approach. Some people like a little bit more of an aggressive approach. There are some people doing some things out there that are maybe questionable and dangerous, but I think finding the right person, the adjustment does not need to be dangerous.

SPEAKER_01

And we were talking on a previous episode is you know, you adjust to all of your family, all your kids and everything are on a plan, right?

SPEAKER_00

Right. Exactly. Exactly. So I'm not gonna do something to the people that I care about the most that would be questionable.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. Well, how about this one? This one's interesting. So it's only effective if you hear the pop.

SPEAKER_00

Oh man, we hear that a lot. All the time. All the time. So the popping clicking noise is just gas and snowbial fluid that's escaping from a restricted segment. So when Say that one more time. It's basically like gas that settles in your system. And so when you move it, it's a release, and so you hear the pop. Okay. So when you're adjusting, you're finding areas of restriction. And um, there's a lot of different ways to explain it, but just providing motion into a segment to get that part of your spine functioning better is what you're doing. You're providing motion so that you can function as a whole. So just because the popping and clicking happens, it's called a cavitation. That's not a sign of a good adjustment. Sometimes that's just something that's associated with getting adjusted. But a lot of people, that audible click is very uh pleasing. And so they're like, oh man, it didn't pop, it didn't work. But that's not always the case. Some people make a lot of noise, some people don't make any noise at all. But that doesn't mean that they're not well adjusted.

SPEAKER_01

I've never heard the the why behind that or what that is. That I that's why I asked you to say it again. I had never heard that before. I didn't know that's what it was.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so basically you're just getting function back into the segment.

SPEAKER_02

Or fun when there's a lot of noise. And people like that, but it really has nothing to do with anything.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. So next one getting older means you'll automatically hurt. Truth or myth.

SPEAKER_00

Common.

SPEAKER_02

It's it's it's common. You know, obviously things wear wear over time, but once again, it's how have you taken care of yourself all those years to get to that point. It's it's all the little things that build up over time. And and so many people have come in, Doc, I don't know what I did. I bent over to brush my teeth this morning and I couldn't stand back up. Well, that didn't put you over over the hurdle there. It's the 40 years of wear and tear that have gotten you to that point. So all the beneficial things of eating better and and moving and exercising and getting adjusted and and keeping yourself up and running, the better you're gonna be later in life.

SPEAKER_00

And I have some 75-year-olds that are in better shape than some 20-year-olds that I treat.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So I know that over time wear and tear does affect your spine. And I know people slowly get arthritis over life, but just because you have that doesn't mean that you're gonna be in pain. There's a lot that goes into that. So I have some patients who have taken care of themselves so well most of their life that they might have some minor setbacks here and there, but they're in really great shape. They don't wake up crippled every morning. But then I've got some teenagers who are maxing out at the gym and aren't eating well and aren't taking care of themselves and they can barely walk in the morning. So I know there are certain factors that as we age get a little more complicated, but for the most part, I don't think age has any anything to do with it.

SPEAKER_02

Notice more the more sedentary you are, the more problems you have. It's the joints need motion to keep them fresh and and keep the nutrients in them and and everything. So everybody that's lounging around on their phone 23 hours out of the day and at a desk all day, those are the ones that really have more problems than than most.

SPEAKER_00

I always relate it to like a car that's been sitting and rusting and the tires get flat. But if you have a car that you're driving and you're maintaining and you're putting gas in it, you're doing the oil changes and you're doing the appropriate things, some of those cars run forever. But if you have one that just sits, usually those are the ones you have issues with. So I can relate it to that too.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. No, you got to take care of your body all throughout life. Because yeah, I mean, like you said, there's two 70-year-olds, depending on what they've done the last 50 years, it can be a huge, huge difference.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. Yeah, we always joke that moss doesn't grow on a rolling stone. So that's a pretty good thing to keep in mind.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. Well, this one's interesting. How many times do people come in and say, Hey, my spine's out of place, or my spine's out of whack? You get that a lot?

SPEAKER_02

Probably most of the day. Yeah, it's always something. And and there is some alignment issues, but when they say it, they think part of it's over here on the left and another part's over here on the right.

SPEAKER_00

Or it's like rotated all the way out or something like that. We always joke, we're like, where did it go? Like it's still there. It didn't, it's not dislocated. We hear that a lot.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, it's it's still connected. It it might be skewed a little bit, um, but most everything we see are if we were measuring them inches, you know, it's very minor changes. Um, but the the big part is those nerves are sensitive tissues. So it doesn't take a lot of pressure or change to get it irritated. Yeah, that's that's the big thing.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, it's not going anywhere. No, right. It just needs a little assistance. No, if it's some mobility, usually.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, if it's dislocated, you should probably go to the hospital.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I always tell people that. I'm like, if it's a dislocation, don't call me.

SPEAKER_01

Right, right. Not at the right place. That's what happened. So well, this one is kind of relates to the first one we did. Chiropractic is a one-time fix. You hear that a lot?

SPEAKER_00

We do.

SPEAKER_02

We do, yeah. And and yeah, people get great relief typically after that first visit or two.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, especially if they haven't ever had it and you're finally moving their body for the first time. Right.

SPEAKER_02

They they notice a big change.

SPEAKER_00

They do notice a change, but it does, like anything else, take consistency.

SPEAKER_02

Gotta retrain everything, the muscles and the tissues.

SPEAKER_01

I know when I was growing up for this next one, I was probably guilty of this. Growing up when I was a teenager and everything, I was working out a lot and everything. I had a buddy who had a sister that was a little bit younger. She'd walk on my back and we'd hear the we'd hear the pops and do all this stupid stuff, right? Probably dumb. Well, definitely dumb at the time. A lot of people do that. But I did it. But which brings us to our next one. How often do people come in and say, Hey, can you teach my husband how to do this? Or my husband does this to me every every day anyway, so why do I need to come to you? Do you hear that?

SPEAKER_02

Well, and when they do come into the office and say that you the first question is, Well, I can see that it's not really working out so well. That's that's the big thing.

SPEAKER_00

If you're feeling like you have to have your spouse or child or whatever pop your back or adjust your spine or whatever you think you're doing, and you feel like you need it multiple times a day. So when we're adjusting something, we're finding regions of restriction or segments that need to need to be fixed. When you're having someone who doesn't have any training do something like that, you're going for that big loud crunch or that big loud pop. It doesn't necessarily mean it's what needs to be adjusted. And then most people, they do the same thing every single time. So then that region becomes really hypermobile or it moves too much. But you're still getting that click or that release, you're releasing that endorphin, so it momentarily feels good, right? But you're not fixing necessarily anything. So then you feel like you need it all the time because it feels good when you do it, but you're not fixing it. So when we're doing it, although you might hear an audible click, we're adjusting a segment that needs it, we're finding the segments that need it. When you're having someone do the same thing over and over and over again, you're not really fixing anything. You're just going for that short term.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Yeah. And the one that the one that you see a lot of probably on TikTok and Instagram and everything, the one where people you get behind the person and then you you lean back and kind of go over and they kind of arch over you and that cracks and all that.

SPEAKER_02

But yeah, it's it's the difference is when and when Doc and I we get we'll get on a sp specific segment and get that one spot adjusted versus grabbing both ends of the wet towel and wringing out the whole thing and hoping for the best.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, I I vividly remember laying on my buddy's floor and then his sister would walk up and just I remember cheerleading days.

SPEAKER_00

I would have my whole team lay on the concrete floor and I would push on their back. Oh, really? The thought of that now just I cannot.

SPEAKER_02

Right, right. Oh, the good old days.

SPEAKER_00

Uh-huh. Yeah, so I would say that just let a trained professional do it.

SPEAKER_01

There you go. Well, now that we've dispelled some of these myths, let's uh walk through real quick kind of your diagnostic procedure. Somebody comes in and starts talking to you about something they have going on. Walk us through how you go through that with them.

SPEAKER_00

I think we've kind of talked about this before, so it doesn't bother me. Um so basically when a patient comes into the office, they fill out paperwork or they can do it beforehand and it goes over their general complaints. We do um kind of a generalized history, and then we'll do a family history, we have them rate their pain, we go over a couple of other questions, smoking, drinking, that kind of stuff. And then when they come into the office, we ask them to kind of go over what bothers you the most. And that's usually how because sometimes people come in with multiple complaints. What bothers you the most, we'll start with that and we'll kind of ask how long it's been going on, when did it start? How would you rate it? How would you describe it? What makes it better? What makes it worse? And so then once you go through that, there's a neuroassessment you can do, reflexes, dermatomes, myotomes, which are just all going to basically test the nervous system and how it's working. And then there's palpation, which is where we're finding those areas of restriction. Um, and then there's orthopedic testing, too, where you put patients through a series of different things, and then whether that uh causes that pain response or not, then you can know what you're what you're diagnosing them with.

SPEAKER_01
